Angel Food Ministries helps families save money monthly on their food bill. They do that by using churches as host sites to eliminate the costs of having a retail food establishment. This can be a wonderful way for a church to reach out to their community on a monthly basis. Asking people if they would like to save money on their groceries is a very non threatening way to initiate a conversation with a stranger!
Many “Mainline” congregations are very reticent about mentioning their Christian beliefs to people outside the church because they fear being “pushy”. This fear guarantees the failure of the church to pursue Jesus Christ’s Great Commission from Matthew 28:18 - 20.
As food prices consume a larger share of the family budget, information on how to save money on groceries is of increasing importance to many people. One mainline church reports that by beginning this ministry, they are now in touch with 300 unchurched families monthly whom they may lovingly serve and introduce to Christ and His Church.
Don’t be put off that many participating churches are “charismatic” or “fundamentalist”. Instead, use the infrastructure they have by God’s grace built to promote the kingdom of Jesus where you are. They’ll certainly be glad you helped.
Here’s another idea, if your church is too small to host the service yourself, check for a local host site in your area and see if they will let your church take the orders and collect the checks for them which you’ll turn in to them by the monthly deadline. You’ll be able to talk to people on a non-threatening subject (saving money on food) whom you might otherwise never have met and yet not have to do the “heavy lifting” - distributing the orders.
